The Original Teachings of The Buddha
"Original Buddhism provides us with a version of religion that is unique and therefore historically invaluable, for every insight into the forms that religion can take increases our understanding of what in essence religion really is" (Hudson Smith, The World's Religions, 97).
Buddha preached of a religion that was without authority, ritual, theology, tradition, and the supernatural. In essence he taught with a mentality that would change the flow of thinking that had led to the clogging, the corrupting, of the Hindu network of religion, a mentality completely backward of that of most religions. This backward, was upward and onward for Indian religion. Buddha's religion did not embrace the archaic, rocky and dried peaks of ancestry, tradition, and ritual of the past. Rather he turned away from them and continued on, he dropped the dead weight of tradition.
